IF YOU WANT TO GROW FASTER, YOU HAVE TO HUMBLE YOURSELF SOONER

My wife and I were in a coaching session with someone recently and the word’s just came out. “If you want to grow faster, you have to humble yourself sooner.”

Those who know this person would all agree, they aren’t the loud, proud, big personality type of person we all think should humble themselves. In fact my guess is that they have to battle a lot of insecurity.

But in our conversation, it became clear they were trying so hard to hold onto control, to a form of perfection and performance for others. The problem - the very act of holding on so tightly to a predetermined standard/perfectionism, was actually undermining their ability to actually achieve it.

  • We get better through trial and error.

  • We get better through small failures met with smart iterations and or complete overhauls.

  • We get better when we allow ourselves to look foolish now, so we can be wise later.

  • We don’t get better by holding all our cards so closely that no one can coach us or provide us with the valuable feedback we need.

Some of us will have a hard time getting humble because of our big ego, we think we’re God’s gift to earth. Others of us will have a hard time because of our insecurity. But all of us are worse off when fail to choose humility and unlock it’s growth producing potential.

So today, if you have a goal you’re aching to achieve or a standard of excellence you want to reach; remember… If we want to grow faster, you have to humble yourself sooner.

See you next Thursday!
